Currituck Beach Lighthouse

If you're visiting Duck, NC, taking a short drive up to Corolla to see the Currituck Beach Lighthouse is a must! This iconic red-brick beauty has been guiding ships along the Outer Banks since 1875, and it’s still standing tall at 162 feet. Whether you're a history buff or just looking for a fun adventure, the lighthouse offers something special for everyone.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse  is the last brick-and-mortar lighthouse built in North Carolina—and its unpainted red brick really makes it stand out. It was designed to help sailors tell it apart from the other coastal lighthouses in the area, and it's got some serious history behind it!

This lighthouse is a first-order lighthouse, meaning it’s got the biggest Fresnel lens out there (yep, there are seven sizes!). Its light flashes every 20 seconds and can be seen from a whopping 18 nautical miles away! Inside, you’ll find exhibits that dive into its rich history and its role in guiding ships safely along the Outer Banks.

What to Expect:

The first thing you’ll notice is that unlike other lighthouses, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse isn’t painted—it has that distinct red brick exterior that gives it a rustic, timeless feel. Once you arrive, you can climb the 220 steps to the top, where you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean, Currituck Sound, and the surrounding marshes.

It's definitely a climb, but totally worth it when you get to the top! Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Currituck Sound, the Atlantic Ocean, and the gorgeous northern Outer Banks. It’s the perfect spot to soak in the sights and snap a few pics.

Fun for All Ages:

Kids love exploring the grounds, learning about the history of the lighthouse keepers, and spotting wildlife in the nearby maritime forests. Plus, it’s a great way to get a little fresh air and exercise. Don’t forget to bring your camera—there are plenty of photo ops, especially with that gorgeous panoramic view from the top.
