The Dunes
Who knew a big pile of sand could be so much fun? (I suppose any one who played in a sandbox as a kid, but this is much better!)
There are several activities that can be done at the dunes. If you've always wanted to try hang gliding they will set you up at Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding School.
If hang gliding is too big of an adventure may be sandboarding is a better fit. You can rent a sandboard from Kitty Hawk Kites.
Our family goes to the dunes because it is the best place to fly a stunt kite.
Jockey's Ridge State Park visitors center is located at: 300 W. Carolista Drive, Nags Head, NC 27959
We think of the dunes as a must-visit destination! It is home to the tallest living sand dune system on the Atlantic coast, it's the perfect spot for flying kites, watching unforgettable sunsets, and soaking up the natural beauty of the area.
For the more adventurous, hang gliding is a signature activity here, with private or group lessons available to get you soaring over the dunes.
Beyond the dunes, a second access area offers a gateway to wetland habitats where you can swim, paddle, kiteboard, or windsurf on the tranquil Roanoke Sound. Plus, the park is the eastern end of the epic Mountains-to-Sea State Trail, making it a great spot for hiking enthusiasts.
Whether you're seeking adventure or simply a beautiful place to unwind, Jockey's Ridge has something special for everyone!
