There\u2019s something wildly romantic and grounding about watching the sky change colors twice a day. And if you find yourself in Duck, North Carolina<\/strong>, you\u2019re in one of the rare places where you can experience sunrise over the ocean<\/strong> and<\/em> sunset over the sound<\/strong>\u2014all in a single walkable day.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s pure coastal magic. And it\u2019s worth waking up early\u2014and lingering late\u2014to soak it all in.<\/p>\n

I'm including photos of some of the sunrise and sunset views I've chased during my years at The Lookout<\/strong>. The Sunset at the top of this page was one of the most incredible I've enjoyed so far. The sound isn't often so calm as it was on that August day.\u00a0 The image still takes my breath away - it reminds me of the angels in my life.<\/p>\n

They won't all be as spectacular; but, each day's sunrise and sunset has its own peaceful beauty not to be missed.<\/p><\/div>

Wake Up for the Sunrise (You Won\u2019t Regret It)<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s a hush that settles over Duck in the early morning. The salty breeze is cool, the sand is still damp with dew, and the only sounds are waves, shorebirds, and the slow stretch of a waking day.<\/p>\n

Head to the beach<\/strong>\u2014just a 5 min walk\u2014and find a spot in the sand or bring a beach chair with a blanket wrapped around you and a favorite morning drink in hand. Get there early - 30 minutes or more before Sunrise will give you the best experience. The first golden light peeks above the horizon and suddenly\u2014bam<\/strong>\u2014the sky explodes with color. Watercolor streaks of pink, orange, lavender, and gold dance across the ocean waves.<\/p>\n

Even on a cloudy morning, the light show can be moody and beautiful. And if you\u2019re lucky, dolphins might even join you, swimming just beyond the breakers.<\/p>\n

Okay, so you may not want to set an early alarm while on vacation - that is okay, because in Duck the sunsets are even better than the sunrise!<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Stay for the Sunset Over the Sound<\/h1>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

As the day winds down, the other side of Duck starts to shine. The Currituck Sound<\/strong>, when it's calm and glassy, becomes a mirror for the sky. And oh, what a sky.<\/p>\n

Sunset in Duck<\/strong> is a whole experience. Whether you're sitting on a bench along the boardwalk, enjoying dinner at a soundfront restaurant, or just watching from a dock or kayak, the view is breathtaking. Soft ripples reflect the oranges, purples, and deep indigos of the evening sky. The whole world feels like it slows down for just a moment.<\/p>\n

There are times when you may be up early but not feeling the walk to the beach - head up the stairs to the Shipwatch. You'll find a beautiful sunrise (or sunset) can be enjoyed from there. (Sunrise photo taken from the shipwatch.)<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

If you feel like an evening drive up to the Corolla Historic Park, it is another of my favorite sunset spots. (The unique walking bridge is located near the Whalehead building.)<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
